Car of the Month - April 2005
Mike Patterson's 1974 Coupe

This 1974 bottom of the line zero option Coupe (2.3 four cylinder and 4 speed) was one of my junk yard finds. The car had been brought in as an abandoned vehicle and I picked it up intending to use it as a parts car. When I got it home I found out all that was wrong was a rusted out thermostat housing so I decided to leave it together.

We cleaned it up and let our daughter use it for a while, and when we got it back it pretty much sat. After we sold our Cobra II my wife told me she would like another II so we decided to build this one.

The engine has 90,000 miles on it but doesn’t use any oil and still runs strong. It got cleaned up, new gaskets, timing belt, a bigger 2 barrel carb and was converted to electronic ignition. The transmission was replaced with a rebuilt C3 automatic. To keep the RPM down on the interstate an 8” rear end with 3.0 gears was installed. To make the car more enjoyable for my wife I also changed it over to power steering and added a “dealer installed” style AC (along with a V8 radiator to keep the engine happy).

The interior which had been spray-painted blue at some point was replaced with a light brown one. All the weather stripping was replaced, a console was added, seats reupholstered, and a new headliner installed.

After talking about different color combinations we decided on black with silver Cobra style stripes.

It’s no V8, but it does OK and my wife loves it. It feels completely different than driving my 77 V8 Coupe but like all the IIs I've had it's a ball to drive.
