| I am going to change from 4 bolt to 5 bolt wheels on the mustang 2 front set-up. I don't know if the rotors are the same diameter, and I would like larger dia. anyway. If they are larger, what all parts do I need to make the calipers work? |

To use the larger rotors, you need a different caliper bracket. I see them on eBay frequently, but I'm sure other vendors sell them. Aside from changing that bracket, I believe it's a bolt-on.

| O.K. more questions. I called the auto pts. stores and they swear all Mustang 2 models used 4 bolt rotors and only offer one part #. Can you tell me what I need to ask for? |

o.k.-yes, all rotors and rear drums were four lug. I came across different lug diameters(on the rear end) when I had to replace one on my cobraii back in about '87...could have been due to the two different rear end styles... I think it's been a topic of discussion here concerning the use of ranger drums on the rear for a 5 lug conversion of the rear end(with what axles I'm unsure-possibly when using the 4 lug axle with the holes welded closed an re-drilled for a 5 lug pattern). Anyway, one of the most common conversions is to order spindles from a hot rod shop or place that deals with after market rack and pinion kits. They will usually have a bracket that bolts to the spindle available that Chevy calipers bolt to(it's been kind of standardized that way). Then granada/monarch rotors can be used(these can usually be ordered aftermarket from the same place you get the other stuff from). The granada rotors are 5 lug and 11 inches in diameter. What I did was bought calipers, caliper brackets, and spindles from Heidts. The spindles I bought were the 2 inch drop spindles. For the rear I'm actually going to fit a Granada rear end housing to the car. It might not be the most ideal way to go because 1)it's still an 8" rear...and 2)the axle tube size isn't the small diameter size that the mustii came with-which means more fab work for the rear sway bar and u-bolts and plates where the shocks bolt to. So, there is an idea for you to ponder and consider researching...keep picking brains on here for more ways though. |

Sorry, thought you already knew that Granada rotors were what you wanted. What cobra67 says is all true, but if you don't want the added expense of new (and GM, shudder) calipers on your II, all you need is the bracket that allows you to use your existing calipers with a Granada 11" rotor. The place I bought mine from years ago was A1 Racing. They are no longer in business, but I know I've seen them offered elsewhere, I just didn't pay much attention as I don't need them.

Found something that might work, first item on the top of the page: http://www.chassisengineeringinc.com/page79.html
What I'm not sure of is if these will work with the MII caliper. They might only fit the larger caliper, the one they sell with the kit says it's a T-Bird caliper. I'd give them a call and talk with them, several sites comment that they are a good company to deal with, though I have never done so myself.

I bought 5 lug conversion rotors from a guy on the internet years ago, and the rear is a 9" from a '59 T-bird, so the rear brakes are the same as an F150's. I plan on cutting off the outside flange of each rotor on the lathe, leaving only the hubs. I'm leaning toward using slip-on style Cherokee front rotors and possibly calipers, depending on how difficult the brackets are to fabricate. Or if it's feasible, modifying the stock Jeep brackets to work. Anyone else ever consider a Cherokee brake swap? I like it for a few reasons, the Jeep brakes are big, the parts are readily available at any parts store, and the slip-on rotors means a very quick and easy future brake service. |

@Blue thunder: i was sure 59 'bird is too wide. the 57-59 ford is correct width for the rear. that being said, there are lots of ways to do the 5 lug conversion out back.
lowest hassle - best value for money is the 8 inch from a maverick/ comet/ granada or monarch. comes with beefier 10" drums.
second best is the slightly wider explorer disc brake rear end that stangdude put in his car.
hard to find Versailles rear end fits but it's $$
comet/maverick/Granada/Monarch/Versailles rotors out front( true! )and there are options for calipers other than GM... Hollander 530-1457 COMET 74-75 disc brake COMET 76-77 GRANADA 75-80 MAVERICK 74-75 disc brake MAVERICK 76-77 MONARCH 75-80 VERSAILLES 77-80
Ive found a non-ford OE ( read: wrecking yard ) aluminum 4 piston caliper that should fit that rotor nicely. I'll let you know if i'll sell the brackets in the future.
@ Blue thunder: i'm working on a slip on brake conversion for a 5 on 4.5 lug wheel. Crown vic cop cars have huge brakes with the right "hat-height" that with Lincoln LS calipers with a shim should get me there. i have a couple of pairs of 71-73 cougar rotors the hubs come out of them and the bearings match the II spindle.
the 2002 exploder has a 12" front rotor with the 5 on 4.5 pattern. how big a slip-on hat do you want? |
