I believe I need to replace my throw out bearing, clutch and pressure plate. Can anyone enlighten me on the easiest way to remove the tranny and bell housing as one peice? Also I would like some input on tranny problems. One day I was driving my II and 4th gear wouldn't stay in gear. Then it started making a terrible, very high pitch howling noise (almost like it was low on fluid but this was 100X worse). Then I heard a sound almost like something breaking (I think throw out bearing but not 100%). The car will still move under it's own power, 4th gear wont go in at all now. I have known I have had to replace my cluth for some time but I would like other input on if my transmission might still be good or not?

It's only 4 bolts to pull the trans off of the bell housing, so I think it's easier to to them apart.

Remove the transmission mount and bracket for the cross member and front #2 cross member. Its a pair of bolts on each side of the brackets. Also, loosen the clutch cable with the nut in front and remove the linkage off the clutch arm. Detach the rear u-bolts from the differential assembly BUT leave the drive shaft in the transmission and pull the shaft and transmission as an assembly. It will save a big leaky mess. If it was me I would lift the car on all four wheels to facilitate the removal. Ideally you want to raise it at least an inch or two higher than the height of the bell housing. I have used ramps and massive wooden blocks and planks to do this to make it easy.

Bottom bolt holding the tail shaft housing to the gearbox is the drain for transmission oil. Drain the oil remove the drive shaft and cover the output shaft with a plastic bag and a zip tie. No mess.

I found this clutch kit on Ebay, would it work on our 302s?

if your clutch or throw out bearing is bad, your clutch pedal will probably be ineffective to try to use. The pedal feel will definitely be abnormal to say the least.
When my throw out bearing took a dump on me, it squealed and popped and that was it..

At idle there is a loud ratling noise near the front of the transmission, it also makes this noise plus the loud howling while moving.

here is a view of your trans .could be a broken fork you said no 4th gear can you fell the fork moving some resistance what ever is rattling around should be removed right away or it will grenade that rad 4.A piece will get stuck between gears and crack something good luck.hopefully just a broken spring in your clutch assembly
