Just wondering how we all came into owning our Mustang II. Share your story. I bought mine for $300 from a freind of my uncle's. His freinds daughter had the car sitting behind her shed for a number of years waiting for me to buy it. I got it in 1994 and had it towed to my house and got the v6 running and got it painted and the Mustang became my first car. That car got me through High School and College and went through 4 girlfreinds. It was parked for 2 years after I bought a newer car and then after its "nap" it was on the road again as a daily driver to shows and crusies and Carlisle. Fall 2005 it underwent a v8 swap. The Mustang II is still as much apart of me as I am of it. Everyone knows that is my car and if I wanted I could leave it outside the local Wawa (convient store) with the keys in it and no one would dare take it lol. Now share your story!!

Mustang II's are Mustangs Too

I bought my current one in December of 2001. I had a 1974 2.3 Coupe when I was in Jr. College and was looking for another one because I'd always liked the body styles and they were the underdogs of the Mustang world. A friend of mine had 7 Mustang IIs and was wanting to sell a 1978 Mach1. It was a cold, rainy night in Nashville, Tennessee when I brought it home. The heater didn't work, had to jump start it to get it running and found out later that night that it had a gas tank leak, but, it was mine! Originally it was a 302/4spd car with A/C. The 302/4spd and A/C were long gone. Under the hood was a 289/T5 combo. Never could get it to run without a vibration and a dead miss. Found out it had a bad cam, replaced it and still had the vibration at 2000 plus RPM. Happens when you have a 28 oz harmonic balancer up front and a late model 50oz flywheel. Changed the balancer, still had the vibration.

Bought a $300.00 junkyard 302 out of a mid 80's F150 and dropped it in, no more vibration and ran good. Replaced the carpet and that's how I drove it until 2003. In September 2003, my wife accepted a job offer in California and she had to take off and get started in the new job, which left me to finish packing up the house and drive the U-Haul. During breaks from packing up the our stuff, I decided to install the EFI 5.0 out of an '86 Mustang LX I had. Engine ran great, but the body and subframe was shot (gave the body to my Nephew's friends that helped load the U-haul). Bought the harnesses, the mass air conversion kit and had it swapped out in less than a week. The end of September I drove it one last time to my Mom's house with the EFI motor installed and running (where it sat for 6 months), the day before I finished loading up the truck and left for Cali.

April 2004, my son and I flew back to Tennessee so we could bring out the Mustang II after the 40th Anniversary Mustang Show in Nashville. I had 3 days to finish what I had started 6 months earlier. My Mom's garage had turned into a Mustang parts warehouse because of the stuff I'd ordered or bought off ebay. Relocated my battery to the hatchback area, installed the '90 GT seats and a few other parts and off to the show. Made it back to California (2300 miles) with the only mechanical problem being a blown radiator in Barstow, California. The towing charge cost more than the single core (Japanese) replacement radiator I zip tied in the car to get it home. Incidentally, I drove the car for another year with that radiator. It has the correct radiator now with an electric fan for cooling.

Since I've had my Mach1 in california, I've gotten it California smog legal and have since put Historic Vehicle plates on it so I can now take the smog crap back off. I've also installed sequential tail lights and a few other things on it. Currently I've started disassembly in preperation for painting it in the next month or so.

And the saga continues.....

My grandpa bought mine from dealeship somewhere around El Cajon California in the September of 1976. My dad used to be friends with the dealers sons so my grandpa got a great deal. I'm proud to say my baby used to sit in the show room. The car was based in Lemon Grove, Califoria for the good majority of its life. It has been a part few major family events. My aunt and uncle drove it while they were on their honeymoon. My parents drove away from their wedding in it. On a couple of their wedding pics you can see small portions of the car. Kind of neat seeing where it was before I was even born. Right now i'm asking my grandpa to dig up the original dealership he bought it from and what price he got for it.

In the late 90's early 2000's my grandparetns hardly ever drove the car and they wanted to get rid of it. They had a number of people that were interested in buying it but they offered it to me first. In the beginning most of my family tried to talk me out of the car because it didn't run well and that it just wanst a very nice car to drive. That and we'd have to drive it all the way from Southern Cali to Central Oregon. It took me two years to convince my parents to let me have the car. I've had it since 2004 and I don't plan on getting rid of it anytime soon, if ever.

The car has been a part of my family history and now it's a part of my personal history. I drove it to high school both Junior and senior year. I went to the prom with it, proud to say she was the only II on campus. I've taken my first road trip with it and even got my first kiss in it. What can I say, I love that car.

This 1978 King Cobra was picked up after watching it sit in a Trans shop for two years. The guy told me he was having a hard time getting parts for the blown rad 4 trans. I thought to myself, I know where to go for help and parts, and that was the beginning. It now has a 302 with a T-5 Trans and this thing just flies!I just want to say thanks to all of the help and advice i recieved from all you II folks this king would still be sitting there or i'm sure it would of been snatched up by another II lover as me if it weren't for this site peace and cruise on come on warmer weather brrrrr i want to drive it so bad

My first 'Stang was a '69 Mach 1, which I bought with an ex boyfriend. A friend of ours bought a 74 Coupe when the lls first hit the Ford lots. At first I didn't like the lls but the more I saw the cars the more I liked them. When my ex and I split up, I bought out my investment in the '69 and bought a 4 banger '76 at a local lot.
This was in '78. I found the car a little gutless, but I learned to get the most out of the vehicle and eventually I found, though it did not have much horse power,I loved the lil' brown coupe. Eventually in '85 I sold my coupe because I got married, resulting in a growing family in need of a mini- van.( I really never got the ll out of my head.)
I went thru' hard times in '95, divorce, etc. The mini-van packed it in so I needed new wheels.
With finances in bad shape I ended up buying a Sporty '94 Tempo at a highly inflated price and interest rate on the only loan I could get due to my circumstances. I drove for a few years until I rolled it on my way to work. My insurance didn't cover the loss of the car and I was left with no wheels, and still had to pay off the loan.During all this I was lucky enough to have a new and trusting friend who I eventually married. He said one of his co-workers had an old Mustang for sale that would get me around , till I could afford something else. When I saw it was a ll, it didn't matter how it looked, I ended up driving it home. I was thrilled... (pretty sad for a middle aged old lady, but so what!)It was a '77 302 coupe. The poor neglected thing was in awful shape, but for 500 $$ and my love for the ll, it was a beauty in my eyes. I hit the wrecking yards and got the car looking pretty hot.
A co-worker who owned a new 'Stang, challenged me on my way to work, thinking the car a joke and they were shocked at what the lil' rust bucket could do!
Eventually I had major problems keeping the car running so I sold it, as is ,to a young kid at a profit. I wish I had some of the parts on that car, for the one I have now.
I bought my present coupe 4 years ago. I wasn't really looking but I came across the car on the internet which was for sale in Burnaby.
It was love at first sight. The guy who owned it just became a millionaire thru' winning a lottery and decided to sell it. I showed my hubby the picture of the car , we went in to town to look at it, not expecting to buy it..but it was mine the next day.
Now, wasn't that a sweet story?

when I was 18 I had a 77 mustang II coupe with a 302. I bought it for $800 from the Jeep/Eagle dealership where my dad worked. I only had it for a few months because it was in an accident, and I guess I never got over that because years later I kept talking about it.

My parents knew how much I loved that car so in 2003 they bought my current one for me as a birthday present. Best gift ever! It wasn't running well and had some rust but I fell in love anyway and decided to fix it up as I could. I spent the first year replacing missing parts. I think a previous owner had canibalized parts of it for another II. I'm the fifth owner.

I've always been into cars but never had much skills when it came to fixing them, but I have done a lot of work on this car myself and it's such a great feeling. This car has been treated badly in the past so I pamper it even though it's just a little V6 coupe with no options. I still have a long way to go before she's fixed up the way I want. I couldn't have gotten this far without the guys and gals on this forum.

Never intended to buy a II was buying an 88 LX notch 5.0L 5 speed in 1989 left over brand new stang was 35 dollars more a month than the 1989 Escort LX I ended up buying, insurance on the Escort 1400 a year on the stang 3600 I could afford thecar just not the Ins.

In 1991 I wanted/needed a 5.0L so a guy at work had a 76 Mach 1 and I liked it so when my 1978 came up for sale for 900cdn I went and looked at it drove it and gave the guy a deposit that night and went back the next day to buy it.

Ins was 600 a year no collosion :)

Painted her, blew her up,rebuilt her, then the tranny, then cracked 8 pistons 3 months after rebuilt again (bad set) cracked another set 3 years later rebilt her again no problems for 10 years now I switched piston brand.

No plans to ever sell it,already willed to my best friend who will drive it until my nephew turns 22 at which point he will sell it to my nephew for a dollar.Cant stand to think of the II not being used if something happened to me.

My first II was a 75 V8 Mach 1. I bought it in 1986 for $1,000 when I was 17 years old. I fixed up and sold it because it had too much rust. At the same time that I owned my Mach 1 my sister got a 78 V8 t-top Mach 1. She let me drive it alot in high school. I should have bought the car when she sold it. I had just bought a super clean original 78 Mustang II V6 2+2, so I didn't. I then sold the 78 bacause my wife at the time wanted a 65/66 Mustang. I missed not having a Mustang II. I then found a sad little 74 Mustang II 2+2 with a non running 2.3L for $200. I got it running and drove it everyday for afew years and then sold it for $700 because I wanted a Cobra II. In 1991 after looking at three Cobra IIs I bought my 76 V8 Cobra II. I drove it home for $1400. The red oil light was coming on at idle. The interior was worn out and the car need a header panel, drivers fender and door, a hatch back lid and bumpers. Some of the other Cobra IIs that I'd looked at were in better condition but they had V6s. I had to have this V8 car. The guy wouldn't go down on the price, I just wanted that car. I then restored the car for weekend drives and shows. In 1994 I was wanting another Mustang II. I had seen alot of drivable Mustang IIs selling for less than $500. I had never owned a Mustang II coupe and told my self the next time I see a cheap Mustang II, I will buy it. I then found my 76 Stallion. I got it for $250 and drove it home, the engine wouldn't idle and the rear brakes locked up, it made it home OK. I then restored that car for weekends and shows. Fast forward to 2001. I still have the Cobra II and Stallion. I was driving my 83 Mustang GT everyday and thinking that I'm taking such good care of the 83 because it was a nice car, that if I had a Mustang II to drive everyday I would be able to keep it just as nice. It was alot harder to find a Mustang II in 2001, I had just found Mustang II net and ebay. So I then found a poor little Dark red 75 Mustang II 2.3L that was being sold on ebay as a parts car. I bought it and got it running, then sold my 83 and finished restoring the 75. I had put so much time and money into the car it was almost too nice to drive everyday. Then in 2002 a friend called me to tell me about a free 77 Mustang in the paper. I was thinking it maybe a good parts car. I went to look at the car and it was in such great condition, I told the owner I would take it. He said I could come back later and get. I didn't want to leave the car and miss out on it so I called a tow truck and got it that day. It didn't take much to get it running. Then I replaced the engine with a rebuilt 2.3L, The C3 with a RAD and the 6 3/4" rear end with a 8". I restored the interior. The car still has the factory paint with some door dings and chips, so I don't have to worry as much when I park in parking lots. I'm always looking at Mustang IIs for sale. Not to buy, just for fun. In 2004 for I found a 78 2.3L Cobra II on ebay. I didn't need another car, I just love the 78 Cobra IIs, The car had a 2.0L stuck in it. I had the 2.3L that was in the Free 77 Coupe when I got it. So I bought the 78 Cobra for $305 and restored it. Then in 2006 in was looking around a wrecking yard and found a 77 V8 coupe. It was too nice to have the front end cut off at the A-pillars and then crushed like all of the other IIs this yard gets. So I bought it for $500. I now have all of the mechanical work done and hope the do the body, paint and interior this summer. Every II that I've sold I miss and wish I still had. That's why I plan to keep all of the IIs that I now own. I don't think I will buy anymore IIs, I never thought I'd own six of them. I love them all, six cars plus my wife's car is enough to take care of. It's just hard to turn down a II in need.

Well, let's start by saying...I am a MOPAR Fan...I know boo, hiss
but I grew up in the era of the Dukes of Hazzard so like every other kid (I think) my dream car was a 69 Charger. After Graduating college I took a job in another city, after working there a few years I managed to save a little bit of money up and while driving back to my apartment from my parents I saw a 69 Charger sitting on someone's front lawn out in the country for sale $4500 I gave the lady $200 deposit and went to call my dad. Well I shouldn't have done that, he wasn't too impressed with me and eventually talked me out of buying it and putting the money towards a house...which reluctantly I did (probably a better financial move)....fast forward 5 years later to October 2000...My newly-wed wife and I were driving to a neighboring town one afternoon...just a nice fall day drive in the country....and we drove by a house and parked out by the county road was this little blue and white car...My wife asked what kind of car is that. I said I didn't know, kinda looked like a Mustang. Now knowing my prior history of the Charger and other Mopars that just weren't "Meant to Be" for various reasons and my desire to own a vintage car...she said "are you going to stop and look at it?" Well I locked up the brakes on that Dodge Caravan right there! went back and had a looksy...the car was a blue 76 Cobra II and was pretty much complete. Turn out to be the guys wife's car that she'd bought when she was 19 and was selling it because he'd sold his storage building and had to liquidate about 7 (camaros, Corvettes and couple of other odd ball cars as well) He told me she only drove it during the summer from 84 to 90 and was garaged since but being a car guy, he kept it fairly well maintained and he fired it right up. He was asking $3,000 so I told him I'd think about it. When I got home that night, talked it over with my wife and offered him $2,000 and the car was mine....we made arrangements to get it the following weekend and got a call from him a couple days later asking me if I was serious about the car...I started to get worried...he told me someone else was interested and willing to pay the full $3,000 for it! But luckily this guy was straight up and said that he'd made the deal and he was sticking to it...even delivered the car to my house and gave me the guys number if I "wanted to make some money" he said. I ripped it up in front of him and said no I have plans for that car. The next month we found out we were expecting our first child...7 years, a new house (with a bigger Garage!) and another child later I have slowly been chipping away at it, collecting parts and repairing damaged ones, preparing for a teardown and rebuild. I was never really into Mustang but I love my Cobra II especially the fact that there isn't alot around (I think there is only a 78 cobra II and a V8 Coupe) in the town where I live. Gets lots of looks when I take her out for a cruise!

Well, you saw in our other thread, I've had a lot of cars. Had a Mustang in HS and always loved em. After I got married some Mustangs made their way home. Fast forward to 1996. We had gotten transfered to GA. I had the 1962 Jaguar MKII, but was tired of paying the high prices for parts. I stated seeing LOTS of Mustangs and found out we were in the backyard of the MCA headquaters. Decided to get rid of the Jag and get back into Mustangs. Found a beat-up 66 fastback and drug it home. I still wanted to have a Mustang to drive while working on the 66. Foung the 78 Cobra in the paper that summer and went to take a look. I never had a II before but remembered the days in HS when these things were new. It was small, had a V8 and I really liked the bold (but worn out) stripes. It also needed some work but took it home and stated working on it while driving it to work. I ended up pushing the 66 aside and spent my time whith the 78. Joined the local Mustang club and had the only II that I knew of. By Christmas 1996 I had the paint and interior done and a couple months later found the stripe kit. After we moved back to MI in the summer of 97, I joined MCMM. Since I had the only II in the club, everytime someone saw or heard of one, I got a call. Since then I've had a few and but still have the 78 Cobra.

My buddy in the Air Force had a 78 Cobra and I always liked the stangs. He says one day in 79, "lets go buy a stang for you." we looked at a 65 and they wanted only 2K, but would you beleive, I could not get financing even being in the military! how things have changed. We went out a week later and found the 78 that I still own. One short trip with the t-tops off in the sunny weather sold me, but could I get the financing? My parents had to co-sign, but I got it. I never drove a stick and right after all the paperwork was done, I had to drive it from Tacoma, WA to Oregon for his wedding.

Fantastic stories, folks! Folly, I can't believe your II was ever unloved, you've really made it a thing of beauty! And the stories of folks who've known their IIs since they wqere new or almost new are great!

Bobby, you and I are just the same age, because I bought my 74 Mach in 87, when I was 18, for $1000. I bicycled everywhere, but had graduated HS and was going to community college in Gresham, OR, which was a couple hour bus ride. I just couldn't take the bus anymore, and told my Grandpa, who owned an auto repair, that I was ready to get a car. Problem was, I had never shown any interest in cars (except for hanging around the shop, I was fascinated by the mechanics or how things went together and how they diagnosed them), and I didn't even know how to drive.

So one Saturday morning I was sleeping in when Grandma woke me up and said 'get up, Grandpa's bringing a car for you to look at. It's a Mustang.' Ok, whatever. I got dressed and sat in the front window, waiting for him to pull up, then he appeared in this funny looking yellow/orange car, and I thought 'Grandpa's off his nut, even I know what a Pinto looks like!" :)

So I hopped in the passenger seat, and sure enough it said Mustang everywhere. It was in super super nice shape, drove smooth. Grandpa said he'd been maintaining it for years for a nice older couple down the street who'd bought it new, and he'd always had his eye on it for when they were going to sell it. Not being able to test drive and knowing nothing about cars, I said ok and wrote out a check for $1000 (I'd been saving money from my afterschool job for college for years, then I won a scholarship for my first year, so I spent the money on a car instead), and Grandpa went and did the deal for me.

So it was probably a month of finding a driver training course, getting my license, and riding my bike down to visit my car at the shop - before I finally got to drive it. I don't remember, it's all a blur, but eventually I did get to drive it home on my own. Funny, you think I'd remember that part!

It seems like after that, I was inseperable from the car. Everything about that period in my life featured that car as either a central player, or the backdrop. I learned to respect it for the Mustang it was, and read up on Mustang history so I could defend it when people called it a Pinto. My dad called it 'pinto bean'. "Why don't you bring that little pinto bean of yours by on Saturday and I'll do the oil?' One of my friends asked me what the plate was and I didn't have it memorized, so she looked at the JKM 524 and pronounced it "Johnny Kiss Me" - and believe me, that I remembered, so from then on the car was 'Johnny' :D

There were alot of other adventures, but I could go on for pages. Everyone who read my posts when I joined two years ago looking for Johnny knows the story after that - I sold him when we got married. Two years ago I came by here hoping to find him, and with some help from internet mustang friends, Johnny was found and recovered, and sits safely in my garage. In fact, I think I'm going to go out and spend a little time with him today. His resurrection is well past due, and I can't wait to sit behind the wheel again.

These are some interesting stories!
Mine starts 33 years ago, on my 18th birthday. My soon to be brother in law had just taken posession of a new '74 MII hatchback. Needing some items at the store to continue the celebration, and with his car being parked behind my (first car)'67 Chevelle and my '64 F85 Cutlass convertible, he threw me the keys to go get them and take the car for a spin. Of course, I couldn't resist!
Well, even though it was only a 4 banger, it went fast enough to get pulled over in the process. Luckily, the cop let me off with a cautionary warning and a happy birthday wish upon checking my drivers license.
Needless to say, my first experience with a II left an impression in more ways than one, and I think I was hooked...even though in that time period between 1973 and 1976 I also had brief ownership of a '68 Mustang coupe.

So, along came 1976, along with the Bicentennial year hoopla in all its glory. The Chevelle and the Olds had already found new owners, and the '68 was now in the condition of most other 8 year old everyday drivers of the time...pretty much shot. I needed some new wheels.

In retrospect, I suppose I could have bought and got a great deal on the purchase of almost any late model muscle car. But, the word that Ford was putting the V8 into the II, (and the possible availablity of a Cobra package in particular)made a trip to the local Ford dealer in order. Turns out, in mid winter, they didn't have one yet. So, I settled for sitting in a new '76 Mach 1 on the showroon floor. It wasn't about to be driven off it anytime soon either, being the only fastback they had, and winter conditions roadways in upstate NY.

Anyway, it excited me enough to take a 40 mile drive to a larger dealership, where 2 Cobras were in stock..a white one, and a blue one. At the time, I wasn't even aware of the blue being offered. A test drive was in order, and possible as well!

As I recall, the blue one had an 8, and the white one was a 6. Of course, I drove the blue one. I was sold in a matter of miinutes behind the wheel. I wasn't however, sold on the blue color entirely, and especially the blue interior. Also, it was an automatic. I needed to think this issue further.

After discussions with salesmen and a week or so to contemplate what I really wanted, I deceided that(being mid winter), I would order the car instead. I settled on a white model Cobra II w/V8, black interior, 4speed, comp suspension, trac loc rear, light group, AMFM stereo, and digital clock. It arrived in early May of that year, and has been with me ever since.

No, it hasn't been stored in a climate controlled garage for 31 years. It's suffered a bit due to the passing of many years, and ownership at the hands of an (almost) typical 21 year old youth. But, it's been pretty much pampered and well maintained its entire life, as well and having only about 55K on the clock at this time. This includes making one cross country drive and back to CA in 1977, and a couple of roundtrips to VA in the early 80's.

It's been a blast to own as a new car, but is probably more of a blast to own as an old one as time goes by. By comparison to many cars in this forum, it needs some re-restoration of sorts to be considered as new or as nice as the best examples existing here. Once repainted in 1986, it could stand another (better) job done before I'll install any of the NOS exterior parts I've acquired over the years. (Needless to say, I still don't have them all either. Hopefully, I'll have all this work completed before social security checks beging grace my mailbox.

This sentimental link to my past always brings memories of a better and less complex time in life and the automotive world as well. Even though it wasn't my first car, (the one people usually cherish most highly), it could surely be considered that in the same sense now, looking back in the prism of time and considering its long presence in my life.

...corrections and comments to my previous post:

a) I was actually 20 in '74..I think

b) another sentence should read:
"...before social security checks begin to grace my mailbox."
(I know, there's probably a better chance of a II becoming a highly sought after collector car, than expecting those checks will still be printed)

c) My apology for other minor typos caused by aging knuckle joints, due to too many years of pumping gas into the II, opening it's heavy doors, and unrolling its crank style windows.

Well let's start the story off by saying I was in the graduating class of 1975 so I was around when the gas crunch hit and the 74 Mustang II came out.I had two older brothers but they were Chevy fans(57 chevy and 68 camaro)but I loved the Mustang(always have , always will). I had a 71 mach in 75 and just never paid much attention to the II's.
Now lets fastfoward to 2003, my oldest son had just turned 16 and we found him a 1978 Mustang II for $300.00.We rebuilt the engine and trans and it was good to go.A few weeks later I ran across another one that I thought I would pick up for parts. The more I looked at it in the driveway, the more I thought, hmmmm, PROJECT CAR.Body straight, needs interior work, engine and trans rebuild.I got the motor and trans rebuilt, threw in carpet and drove it over the next 4 years, working on it as I went and doubling as a work car. That make it hard to fix and drive at the same time.I had it looking good, but was getting to much abuse as a work car to keep it looking good. Now it has been retired as a work car and is going to be restored one more time, only this time from the ground up.

Expect the best, Prepare for the worse
